As Caesar put bellum civile on his resume, he was continuing a republican tradition, one in which competition justified egregious power by identifying victory with the state, one that sought publica auctoritas forprivato consilio, one that fought for and protected res publica, and in so doing brought the republic to an end.

The introduction identifies the currently existing confusion concerning severitas, and demonstrates the importance of attaining as precise a definition as possible. Chapter One establishes how strongly severitas was anchored in the ideology of ancient Rome, whereas Chapter Two concentrates on Cicero's own ambivalent attitude toward this virtue.

Chapter Three discusses the more public application of severitas, particularly in the legal and administrative fields. The Conclusion focuses on summarizing the findings of this paper, and on determining whether there is any textual evidence for a relationship between cruelty and severitas. Appendix A consists of all the Latin passages that contain some form of the severitas concept in the texts of the Ciceronian epoch. Appendix B gives a brief synopsis of the grammatical distribution of sever - in Cicero, whereas Appendix C shows its distribution by category as well as individual works of Cicero.

The text takes account of Gulielmius' reports of the missing portion of the Erfurtensis manuscript, recovered by Dr Berry and published as a preliminary to this edition in ; a complete collation is provided of this and the other principal manuscripts.

The introduction includes a reassessment of Sulla's guilt and Cicero's undertaking of the case, and also considers issues such as the prose rhythm of the speech and its publication. The commentary discusses history, text and syntax as well as rhetoric and style.

And the same is true for essential German contributions to a tradition that has eventually emancipated itself from the confines of rhetoric: In spite of the fundamental differences that separate these oeuvres, they all treat our two terms as two connected notions: Henriette van der Blom argues that Cicero advertised himself as a follower of chosen models of behaviour from the past - his role models - and in turn presented himself as a role model to others.

This new angle provides fresh insights into the political and literary career of one of the best-known Romans, and into the political discourse of the late Roman Republic. Applying a methodology grounded in Socratic skepticism, Cicero synthesizes the Stoics and Aristotle to create his own moral theory.

From this theory, we derive a Ciceronian set of recommended traits that make up a model business leader. Central to this model is the recognition that there are two lodestars in life, the beneficial and the honorable.

The first directs each of us to attend to our personal happiness, and the second to our moral worth. The honor of a business leader is secured by the practice of four virtues: Cicero is not so naïve as to fail to see that the beneficial and the honorable may come into tension, noting various examples from business to illustrate the dilemma.

Oltre al resoconto liviano, oggetto delle pagine conclusive pp. Abstract - This is a conference paper which compares and contrasts the views of Aristotle and Cicero in relation to cosmopolitan political thought.

It reveals a multi-faceted textual - rather than more traditionally defined "literary" - world that both defines the intellectual life of the late Republic and lays the foundations for those authors of the Principate and Empire who identified this period as their literary source and inspiration. By first questioning, and then rejecting, the traditional polarization ofCatullus and Cicero, and by broadening the scope of late Republican socioliterary studies to include intersections of language, social practice, and textual materiality, this book presents a fresh picture of both the sociotextual world of the late Republic and the primary authors through whom this world would gain renown"-- Provided by publisher.

The need to cover a significant gap in the Greek book production on one of the leading Roman authors, which for years was partially covered by editions in foreign languages and general studies with limited references and access to the original text itself, has now been met.

Every effort has been made to produce a modern scholarly edition and commentary that will meet the university teaching needs as well as those of modern readers of a text, the content of which is always topical. It provides a text as accurate as possible, based on the most recent critical editions and modified where necessary, as well as a translation that was tried to keep up with the original Latin in terminology, style and structure.

The commentary, which was meant to be as comprehensive as possible in order to meet the aforementioned needs, covers a variety of issues on textual criticism, style and narrative techniques, language and content. If Quintilian, after Cicero and before Philostratus, emphasizes the need of invention in the oratory, opposing phantasia to mimesis, he also especially developed the idea that the euphantasiôtos orator imagines the events he describes as if he experienced them himself, abolishing precisely the distance that characterizes the imagination of illusion.

Just as fools and dreamers — a philosophical topos included in an original rhetoric - the good speaker must delude himself in order to delude the reader. Phantasia comes close to madness, an element that clearly reflects the work of Seneca the Elder, and on which the theories of Quintilian shed light in an original manner.

John Dugan argues that Cicero's rhetorical works - far from being disinterested, purely abstract investigations of oratory - form part of a discernible programme in which Cicero constructs his self. Cicero uses these cultural works to solidify his political and literary legacy and to frame himself as a new entity within Roman cultural life: Eschewing conventional Roman notions of manliness, Cicero constructs a distinctly aestheticized identity that flirts with the questionable domains of the theatre and the feminine, and thus fashions himself as a 'new man'.

The first of four chapters explores Cicero's use of cultural writing for political ends, and proposes that he wrote two speeches, For Archias and Against Piso, as showpieces intended to become oratorical classics that fix flattering images of their author. Chapter 2 analyses how Cicero's On the Ideal Orator presents him as a figure who borrows the feminine grace of the theatre while maintaining a properly masculine self.

Chapter 3 shows how Cicero's history of oratory, the Brutus, presents its author as the 'end' of Roman rhetoric: The final chapter investigates how Cicero's Orator offers his speeches as a canon of sublimely perfect Roman oratory.

Dugan argues that Cicero's rhythmical prose gives his texts the bodily integrity necessary for them to live apart from their original utterance. Cicero's textual corpus thus replaces his bodily corpus. The comprehensive introduction contextualises the text and the trial itself. The commentary provides extensive notes on language and style which allow upper-level undergraduates and graduate students to engage fully with the speech.

This, the first new edition of the work in English to be published for almost a century, provides a Latin text and commentary updated to take account of advances in the study of the Latin language as well as Roman institutions, law and society. It is suitable for use with upper-level undergraduates and graduate students.

One should, strictly speaking, refer to the work in the plural, for though it is untrue that it was ever published in separate parts, as has sometimes been believed, it consists of two largely independent, though complementary, dialogues, the first containing criticism of Cicero, and concluding with his banishment, the second recounting his praises and his triumphant return. As is the case with all but the major authors of the Cinquecento, the factual information available in reference sources on Lando and his works, where it is not inaccurate, is often incomplete, and first-hand research is essential if interpretation of his works is to be freed from dependence on misleading or inaccurate surmises passing as factual data.

The broad and profound influence of classical rhetoric in early America can be observed in both the academic study of that ancient discipline, and in the practical approaches to persuasion adopted by orators and writers in the colonial period, and during the early republic. Classical theoretical treatises on rhetoric enjoyed wide authority both in college curricula and in popular treatments of the art.

Classical orators were imitated as models of republican virtue and oratorical style. Indeed, virtually every dimension of the political life of early America bears the imprint of a classical conception of public discourse. This essay marks the various specific aspects of the reception and influence of the classical rhetorical tradition in the learning, speaking and writing of Americans in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Abstract - In this essay, I offer a sympathetic reading of the rhetoric s of Augustine's Confessions. First, as a historian of rhetoric I am interested in what Augustine's narrative can tell us about the theory and practice of rhetoric in the late classical period and the early Christian era.

From this perspective, I am interested in exploring what Augustine discloses about the rhetoric he learned in the provincial Roman schools, and taught at Carthage, Rome, and Milan. Second, I am interested in Augustine's own work on rhetoric, especially his De Doctrina Christiana, most of which he composed during the period right before he began the Confessions.

In particular, I am interested in how the rhetorical ethics that emerges from Augustine's formal treatment of Biblical exegesis and preaching, and which distinguishes Augustine's rhetoric from that of his classical predecessors, can illuminate our interpretation of the Confessions. Finally, I am interested in exploring how the Confessions itself works as a rhetorical text— that is, as a discourse addressed to an audience for the purpose of influence.

In particular, I am interested in exploring the specific pastoral functions served by Augustine's narrative. This is a study in Renaissance jurisprudence. Many related texts are discussed. As the title and sub-title suggest, there are at least three strands of thought which stand out, each with a neglected history of its own, though our main concern is their distinctive combination in the realm of Renaissance "legal philosophy.
